I believe this is a juvenile Pileated Woodpecker.

But I'm not sure about it, seeing this is Brazil.

Interesting tree.

This is a Lineated Woodpecker (Dryocopus lineatus), but I reckon they look quite alike. I myself was convinced that I was looking at Woody Woodpecker, even though this was taken in Southern Brazil.

This is the delightful call of the Lineated Woodpecker:

The tree is a dinosaur-friendly Araucaria:

Thanks for the IDs, sounds much like a Pileated
(which was the original model for Woody Woodpecker).

Slightly embarrassed not to recognize the 'Chilean Pine'
or Monkey-puzzle tree, they are common (ish) around here.

Hey, I didn't know you had our araucarias up there too! It's a small world, after all.

Thank you for all the comments =)

Captain George Vancouver mapped most of
the west coast, pre-Panama. So of course he
sailed up along the Chilean coast first. There
are 2 cities named after him, also an island.
He brought the Chilean Pine with him.

sorry about all of the Araucaria comments

let me know if you haven't seen one in bloom,
I have some not very good pictures from 2007.
My branches look very different from yours.

Hmm, I gather there are many species of Araucaria... ours doesn't noticeably "bloom". I would love to see those photos you have!

Also thank you for the info on Vancouver!

Like the red spot in contrast with the overall pic tone.
