elif shafak reads from "bastard of istanbul" at her only american reading. due to death threats, she had to curtail the tour. to one stop. she apparently betrayed 'turkishness' to a few when a character of hers referenced the 'genocide' of the armenians in 1915. she put on a good show, despite how nervous she was, and it turned out just fine, no holes in anyone.

Truly appalling situation, yet no more appalling than so many other atrocities we read about every day. Still, to have her right in front of you. Nervous, Fearful, Courageous. Punctuates the liberties we still enjoy and take for granted. And an eerie reminder of those we are losing.
