There have been a number of tutorials about using NASA pictures to create
a realistic Earth but the BlenderGuru one is the best, in my opinion: http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/create-a-realistic-earth/ As usual, I departed from the tutorial in a number of ways. This is from June 2011. Best viewed at full resolution. |

Great quote (from your site):
We don't have to save the world. The world is big enough
to look after itself. What we have to be concerned about is
whether or not the world we live in will be capable of
sustaining us in it. – Douglas Adams, 2001
Given the nuclear threat, the question might be posed as:
Do we really want to leave our wonderful Earth to
be inhabited by giant radiation-deformed cockroaches?
Global warming is only really a threat to land and ice
based species; the flooding will cover most of North
America (which is very blase considering), wipe out
Micronesia and so forth. Good luck growing anything
at high elevations ... the picture from Aus (Oz) of all
the people with the heads in the sand and their arses
exposed was priceless.
